PTA Events:

Epic Challenge is Thurston PTA’s yearly event. This is our biggest fundraiser. 100% of the dollars raised go back to Thurston PTA to support the school. Coordinating with the P.E. department, students engage in fun “Super Games” and “Minute to Win it” challenges. Students request donations and sponsors to support them as they take on the Epic Challenge! This is our home grown fundraiser. No more selling “stuff” is our goal at Thurston PTA.

Out on the Town is Thurston PTA’s spring dinner fundraiser. Parents purchase tickets for a Progressive dinner around downtown Laguna Beach. Many restaurants host our parents for the evening as they move around to different restaurants for different courses. The final course is a dinner buffet and dancing.

Sports Swap is our event each November where parents and all community members can sell their gently used sporting equipment. Many stores in town also donate their sports supplies for PTA to sell. PTA keeps a percentage of each sale.

Book Swap is an annual event held by PTA. Students bring in their gently used books and may swap to receive others gently used books. Thurston PTA organizes, collects, and holds the entire Book Swap.

Book Fairs are sponsored and managed by Thurston PTA once or twice a year to encourage student literacy, while donating all profits to our Thurston Library.

Thurston Middle School Events:

Blue and Gold Assembly is an end of year evening awards ceremony for Thurston students who are receiving various honors and awards. Invitations are mailed out to those selected students.

Career Day is a biennial one-day event, inviting 7th and 8th graders to meet and learn from professionals in a variety of vocations about different career paths. (This will not be happening in 2016 – 2017 school year.)

Oral History projects are prepared by 6th grade Language Arts students and presented to family members and friends at one of three luncheons held in the gym. The program is supported by Thurston PTA volunteers and funds.

SMART Assemblies are held occasionally to reward students who have received SMART cards, involving fun presentations, and prize giveaways.

SMART cards are affirmation cards given to students for good choices and behavior. SMART cards can be turned in for prize drawings, which happen every two weeks.

Science Camp is an annual 6th grade outdoor learning adventure on Catalina Island. The planning and implementation are handled by Thurston Middle School.
